Given the sheer volume of Batman, Superman and Spiderman popcorn fodder that's arrived in cinemas in recent years, it's hard to believe (read: a downright depressing insight into the minds of studio heads) that it's taken 75 years to bring a standalone Wonder Woman film to the screen.

Luckily, from the latest trailer released by Warner Brothers, it seems that this summer's Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot as the superhero of the title (or, as she's also known in this trailer, Diana of Themyscira) will right that wrong in spectacular style.

The new clip offers a deeper look at Diana's backstory (or her 'origins,' as superhero devotees are wont to say), growing up on the island of Themyscira - home to the mythical Amazons - and training to become the kickass fighter that we know and love (aka, the only redeeming feature of last year's Batman Vs. Superman...)

It also gives us a glimpse at Chris Pine's character, an Allied spy named Steve Trevor, but it looks as though he is very much a sidekick (as Wonder Woman, the opposite of the damsel in distress, hardly needs to be rescued by a man, thanks.

In a recent interview with Collider, the Israeli actress discussed why her character is such a good role model, explaining that ‘first of all, she doesn’t see that difference between any gender. It’s not even an issue […] She feels that she can do everything and she will go for it.’

The star, who is mother to a five-year-old Alma and is currently expecting her second child, added that a conversation with her young daughter also helped throw the importance of her new film into relief.

‘It’s funny because I just had the conversation with my daughter two nights ago. I put her to bed and I was reading her a story and it was about princesses,’ she told Collider. ‘Then she was talking about the prince […] and she said, “Yeah, and the prince, they’re usually very strong.”’

‘And I asked her, “And what about the princesses?” [She said] “They’re weak.”’

‘And I said, “And how do you think they should be, Alma?” She said, “They should be strong,” and I feel very proud that finally this movie is being made, because all of you guys, all men and all boys, always had a figure to look up to, whether it’s Superman or Batman or Spider-man, whatever it is, they always had heroes to look up to.’

‘And for girls, it’s always the princesses are being saved or being passive and finally Wonder Woman, she’s fearless, she’s proactive, she believes in herself., She believes she can do everything, and that’s a true woman for me.’

Wonder Woman arrives in cinemas on June 2nd 2017.
