This runaway success has ensured that a sequel is already in the works, with Wonder Woman 2 officially confirmed by Warner Bros at Comic Con in July. Here's everything we know so far about Wonder Woman's next solo screen outing...
Wonder Woman 2 cast: Gal Gadot will reprise her title role
After stealing the show from Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in the much-maligned Batman Vs. Superman in a matter of minutes, it's now hard to think of anyone other than Gal Gadot playing Diana of Themyscira. She is, of course, a dead cert for any sequel, though we'll next see her as part of an ensemble cast in the forthcoming Justice League movie.
It'll be set during the Cold War
Having wrapped up World War One after a showdown with Ares, God of War, Diana's next adventure will skip forward multiple decades, taking her to the heart of another major global conflict: the Cold War of the 1980s. Director Patty Jenkins had previously hinted that a sequel would be set in America rather than Europe, and this time, Wonder Woman will be fighting on the side of the United States against the Soviet Union.
Wonder Woman 2 release date: it will arrive in cinemas in time for Christmas... 2019
Wonder Woman 2 has just been given a release date of December 13th 2019, meaning that we've got a long wait ahead of us. In the mean time, Wonder Woman will make an appearance in Justice League, where she'll doubtless show Batman, Superman et al how it's done (again...)
Chris Pine will return (but the logistics might be complicated)
Spoiler alert: Chris Pine's Steve Trevor does not emerged from Wonder Woman's final conflict unscathed, so it's surprising to learn that Pine is reportedly back on board for the next film. This being the comic book universe - and Pine's Trevor being such a charmingly beta love interest - we're more than willing to suspend our disbelief to make this happen. There's always the possibility of flashback or even time travel sequences to bring the WW1 fighter pilot into the plot, or even - as rumoured a while back - the chance that Pine could play his character's conveniently identical descendant...
Patty Jenkins is already developing the script
There’s no point touting ideas of gender equality on screen if behind-the-scenes things are a total boys’ club. That’s why it was so heartening to see Wonder Woman smashing the glass ceiling and becoming the highest grossing live-action film directed by a woman.
Though it’s not yet been confirmed that Patty Jenkins will be returning to the director’s chair, happily she is already playing a major role in shaping the Wonder Woman sequel. ‘Patty and I are writing the treatment right now,’ DC Films’ Geoff Johns told Variety. ‘The goal is to make another great Wonder Woman film. I had a blast making it with Patty the first time. We’ve got a cool idea for the second one.'
