Wimbledon: Where Unexpected Celebrity Friendships Blossom

Time to play the game of 'Spot the A-lister'...

Wimbledon: it's among the most prestigious tennis competitions in the world (not to mention one of the UK's most popular annual sporting events), but it also doubles up as a high-profile celebrity mixer. Every year, the royal box serves as the perfect platform for arbitrary combinations of celebrities to team up, share strawberries and cream, sip Pimms and exchange tentative small-talk while admiring Kate Middleton's hair from afar.

If you thought that the Met Gala was the foremost event for throwing together A-listers in increasingly random iterations, consider some sample Wimbledon seating plans from recent years. We've had fictional Love Actually Prime Minister Hugh Grant placed in the same box as actual Prime Minister David Cameron. Football royalty David Beckham chatting with fashion royalty Anna Wintour. Bradley Cooper hanging out with TV survival expert Bear Grylls, or forging a bromance with fellow actor Gerard Butler. And Drake just being Drake. It's surely not the only occasion where stars join up in unexpected combinations, but unlike, for example, an exclusive awards show after-party, it's a rare opportunity for us nosy civilians to see them exchanging pleasantries and forging sort-of friendships in public.

That's not to say that celebrity spotting is only enjoyable when the celebrities in question seem to have strayed far from their usual social circle: it's always fun to see the Duchess of Cambridge sharing a joke with her sister, Pippa, the Beckhams hanging out en famille, or Twitter's first couple Chrissy Teigen and John Legend taking in the drama on Centre Court. We're yet to see what random combinations 2018's tournament will bring, but in the mean time, here are some of Wimbledon's best celebrity moments...
