A new crime drama has just dropped on the BBC, and it features a stellar all-Welsh cast as well as some breathtaking scenery. The One That Got Away— which was directed by Sion Ifan, who worked on S4C drama series Y Goleudy— is a six-part series which was shot and released in October 2024 under the name Cleddau.

The show follows two ex-lovers, DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys, The Mallorca Files) and DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington, Hinterland), who are tasked with identifying the killer of a young nurse. Her body is found in the woodlands in west Wales, and the case is eerily similar to one the pair worked on years ago, forcing them to consider the possibility of a copycat killer— or maybe even a wrongful conviction. The pair must solve the case while working through their own complex relationship.

The show’s writer Catherine Tregenna — who also worked on Law & Order UKLewis, Doctor Who, Casualty and DCI Banks— describes the show as ‘a forensic analysis of a love affair.’

The One That Got Away, which is set in Pembrokeshire, was filmed in south Wales and Pembroke Dock. Specifically, a lot of the show was shot in the area surrounding River Cleddau, including the Cleddau Bridge.

Catherine Tregenna said the area used for filming is one of her favourite places. ‘Artists are drawn there from all over the world,’ she noted, adding she believed the show's artistic directors had done the area ‘justice.’

Catherine also hopes that the show will showcase Wales's ‘beautiful and bleak’ landscape. After shooting the show in Welsh, Catherine said, ‘I speak it somewhat fluently, but I haven't quite mastered the mutations.’

Welsh actress Elen Rhys who stars as DI Ffion Lloyd was thrilled to return to Wales for the shoot. She said, ‘Coming home to Wales to film was a joy – immersing myself in everything Welsh. The talented, close-knit crew worked together so well, making it a truly lovely and extraordinary experience. I felt so lucky.’

The show has already been raking in rave reviews, and is a must-watch for any fan of gritty crime-dramas.
