Time Magazine's most influential person of 2014 is using her power wisely. Beyonce has launched a #WhatIsPretty campaign to help promote self-esteem in girls and women. Having unintentionally (?) started the #nomakeupselfie #iwokeuplikethis #flawless trend, B - one half of arguably the most famous and successful couple in the world (sorry Kimye) ties in the campaign with her recently released Pretty Hurts video, which sees the singer entering a beauty pageant - glitter and glamour giving way to the dark world behind it, complete with bulimia, diet pills and filling up on cotton wool and plastic surgery.
We're guessing Bey's hoping for more of the "I love my flaws, they give me character #whatispretty" type posts rather than "Look at my 23 inch waist and perfectly symmetrical face #whatispretty" type ones, but then again, pretty comes in all shapes and sizes, right? So what have we learnt so far about people's perceptions of beauty via the #WhatIsPretty hashtag? Well, judging by Twitter and Instagram - pretty much everything and anything goes - just how we suspect Queen B would want it.
So far we've spotted loads, and loads, and loads of selfies (any excuse, right?) as well as family photos with even new born babies, mums and grandmothers getting in on the action. There's also a natural hair selfie a-plenty, bald headed cancer survivors as well as an abundance of food and motivational quotes. Yeah, we think food is pretty darn pretty too!
Others are using the hashtag as a way to reflect they are out and proud, with many flying the flag for gay rights: "It's been about 3 years since I've been out and proud. I'm still working on growing as an individual, slowly accepting every aspect of who I am... Remember, regardless of who you are... You are loved and You are NOT alone #whatispretty" wrote one Instagram user.
Oh how do we love Bey; let us count the ways...
