It’s summer, which along with (some) sun, it means the return of* The Only Way Is Essex*. Back in Marbella the cast lugged themselves and their bikinis off to Spain for more drama, drinking and fighting for the season opening on Sunday night. One scene in particular caused a bit of a Twitter meltdown however, yes we’re talking about James ‘Arg’ Argent and Lydia Bright’s casual beach side meet up – the first since their break up back in May.
The on-off couple have been through a bloody lot. Lydia has taken him back time and time again for cheating, helped him through a drug addiction which then saw him being dropped from TOWIE in November 2014. They then split again in May this year, after Lydia caught Arg on a ‘cocaine binge.’ According to The Sun, Lydia came home from an event to find Arg out of it, she was obviously very devastated and decided to end it as drugs 'just aren’t her lifestyle.’
Back to Sunday night’s episode and their casual beach side meet up. The two supposedly hadn’t seen each other since the break-up, so Lydia decided to tell it how it is and let Arg know exactly how she was feeling.
*‘I don’t want us to ever be friends. I don’t want you to speak to my friends and family. You made me hate you. When I look at you, I despise you. I just can’t get my head around it. I never understand it. And what you did that night, for me is the most disrespectful selfish act that I’ve ever heard of. What you did was disgusting, absolutely disgusting, but you knew you wanna do it.’ *
This meeting left viewers pretty angry. With lots taking to Twitter to vent their frustrations about how mean Lydia was in making Arg cry – because he walked off sobbing.
Arg walking off was sad, I won't lie. It did tug on my heart strings a little bit seeing a 28-year-old cry as he wandered along the beach. Yet the important thing that people are missing here is she’s been hurt time and time again, probably cried time and time again over Arg's actions, and it’s OK for her to take back her life. Yes, it could have been done off camera but Arg knowingly chose to meet during filming so he must have expected a bit of a showdown, and agreed to be filmed.
If she needs to tell him straight how she feels so he stops holding onto the possibility they might get back together and gets the help he so clearly needs surely that’s better, right? Saying enough is enough is a pretty brave thing to do, especially given the circumstances of their very turbulent relationship. Not everyone gave her grief on Twitter, with supportive tweets making appearances, but isn’t it time we stop attacking women for putting a stop to shit that’s causing them pain?
