We've all seen celebrities on Tinder. Sometimes they'll be arm-in-arm with the distinctly-average looking person whose profile it is. We'll drunkly right swipe them then realise the error of our ways later on, when it dawns on us that no, Eddie Redmayne probably doesn't have Tinder.
Other times there will be a legit D-list celebrity on the hot-or-not style dating app, looking for more ways to meet someone than through a Mayfair club that sells magnums of champagne with fireworks sticking out. But often, we just know that the 'celebrity' in question is an imposter, trying get the attention of people who would never usually give their face the time of day. Now, that's no longer going to happen.
In what could be a massively ego-boosting exercise for various single celebrities out there, Tinder is going to verify the famouses' profiles, and let them set them up without using Facebook. This means that, even if they've changed their name to Bojangles Sedwick or whatever on Facebook (a lot of celebrities do this to hide their true identities and remain as private as possible), they can still get a Tinder profile and prove they are who they say they are on the app.
'We’ve had celebrities reach out to us frequently throughout the last year, sort of calling out various frustrations convincing users that they were actually who they are' co-founder Sean Rad told TIME. 'One impediment is that sometimes their Facebook accounts, which we pull information from, includes different names than their actual likeness… So [celebrities] were asking for the ability to modify their Tinder name and maybe have a verified badge.'
Cool. Just when we'd got over the last bout of Tinder-related-thumb-cramp, here comes along another reason to keep on swiping.
