If the bookies are anything to go by, a female Doctor may be on the cards.
Following the news that Peter Capaldi will step down from his role as the Doctor in the hit BBC show at the end of the year, speculation has been rife about who will become the 14th actor to play the part.
Names flying around currently include Ben Whishaw of James Bond fame, and The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade, however discussions of late have turned to the idea that we will have the first female Doctor.
Earlier this month ex Doctor Who star, Billie Piper said it would "feel like a snub" if the role didn't go to a woman. "I think it would be great [to have a female Doctor] given the spirit of the world at the moment. I think it would be timely," Piper told the BBC.
And Doctor Who’s outgoing executive producer Steven Moffat has previously hinted that it’s time a woman was the cast in the lead part. “I think the next time might be a female Doctor. I don’t see why not,” Moffat said.
The current bookies favourite is Tilda Swinton. According to Ladbrokes her odds to bag the big part have increased from 10/1 to 7/2.
Other women being suggested include Olivia Colman (5/1), and Phoebe Waller-Bridge ( 12/1).
The BBC or Swinton have yet to comment.
