If you're one of the many people with plans to watch the whole of series 3 of The Crown in one, marathon session, you may notice that Wales takes centre stage. First, through the recreation of the Aberfan tragedy of 1966, and second, as a young Prince Charles heads to Aberystwyth to learn about the country before officially becoming its Prince. But you could be forgiven for thinking that Princess Anne, his younger sister, isn't too fond. She makes a jibe or two while on the phone to a homesick Charles from Buckingham Palace. Luckily Erin Doherty, who plays Princess Anne, assures Grazia that it's all in good fun.
'I felt so bad!' she told us ahead of the launch. 'I'm just taking the mickey out of Wales aren't I? I have so many close Welsh friends.'
'I'm sure Anne doesn’t hate Wales,' she continues, 'but as an English person, you kind of take the mickey out of the rest of them with a fondness, so I think that's kind of what she was doing. But honestly, when I got the script through, I was like, "I'm not going to be able to live this down."'
For Erin, the teasing is important as it shows Anne's relationship with Charles, who is struggling to settle in to university after being happy at Cambridge. 'I think she's using it to brighten the mood with Charles, because he’s obviously terrified.'
Erin joined the cast for series three, along with actor Josh O'Connor, who plays Charles. Charles moved to Wales to attend Aberystwyth University College for one term in 1969. He has claimed that he was targeted by Welsh nationalists while there, who took issue with England's presence in the country.
‘I went to these lecturers and most days there seemed to be a demonstration going on against me with a counter-demonstration, usually by splendid middle-aged ladies who got out of a bus', he told a documentary. 'That was an interesting experience! I did my utmost to learn as much [Welsh] as I could which in a term it is quite difficult and I am not as brilliant a linguist as I would like to be.’
