Olivia Colman has spoken out against the press treatment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, The Crown actress - who is set to play Queen Elizabeth in the new series - called it ‘evil’ and supported their decision to spend Christmas in America. ‘It's just evil,’ she said. ‘They're mean to them. Everything they do, they step outside their house and it's something.I don't know why they're so mean to a fellow human being. It always strikes me as odd.’

Speaking about the couple’s Christmas plans, which sparked controversy as they will not be spending time with the Queen (even though the Middletons don’t always spend Christmas at Windsor). She added, ‘Everyone wants a little Christmas on their own every now and again. It's alright.’

In Christmas 2016, Kate and William spent Christmas at her parents' house in Bucklebury, attending church their on Christmas day with Princess Charlotte and Prince George. The couple have spent multiple Christmas days with the Middleton family rather than with the royal family.

It was reported yesterday by the Daily Mail that Meghan is considering spending Thanksgiving in the UK, while spending time volunteering at a homeless shelter. According to the paper, Doria, her mum, would fly in.

In last month's documentary Harry & Meghan, An African Journey, viewers heard how Meghan was warned by a British friend not to marry Harry due to the UK's tabloid culture. The mother-of-one admitted, ‘When I first met my now husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy. But my British friends said to me: "I’m sure he’s great. But you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life."'

The Crown season three will arrive on Netflix on 17 November.
