As Her Katy Perry Feud Continues Forget the election for just one second, because Taylor Swift just landed a heavy blow on Katy Perry’s ego, and maybe her bank balance. And it all involves Taylor doing something as seemingly innocuous as putting her music onto Spotify. Bear with us.
In case you didn’t know, the pop feud to end all pop feuds (because really, it’s 2017, we’re fully over women artists being pitted against each other, and women artists pitting themselves against each other, and women artists saying ‘I’m not against her but she’s against me and it’s time for her to stop with the bullshit isn’t she awful?’) started ages ago. Taylor had some dancers, who went to work with Katy instead, and then followed a few subtweets to each other on Twitter, Katy’s then-boyfriend Diplo joking that there should be a kickstarter to save up for Taylor to get bum implants, Taylor releasing Bad Blood, Katy releasing Swish Swish…
And now…this.
Context first. You know how Taylor hates streaming sites? Remember how she wrote a tirade against Apple Music for not paying their artists for each users’ first three months of streaming, which Apple responded to uncannily quickly by changing the rules so that artists would get paid?
Sidenote: a conspiracy theory goes that Taylor and Apple had an agreement to play it out like this, as a proper publicity stunt - making Taylor look commanding and all #girlboss, and making Apple look able to adapt to the ever-changing needs of their customers and clients.
Well, Taylor hasn’t ever put her music on Spotify. That is, until the very day her ex-buddy Katy releases her album, Witness And that, friends, is how petty just got redefined.
