Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last week, you’ll be well aware of the Taylor Swift VS. Kimye feud in the social sphere.
But just in case – here’s a brief summary. Since Kanye West released his controversial song Famous in April, Taylor’s camp has been adamant she did not agree to a specific line in the song referring to Taylor as ‘that bXXXh’. After a month of ‘He Said…She Said’, Kim Kardashian West went and released a phone conversation between Taylor and Kanye this month which appears to prove the 1989 singer did in fact approve the song beforehand.
Afterwards Taylor wrote on her Instagram: ‘Where is the video of Kanye telling me he was going to call me ‘that bXXXh’ in his song? It doesn’t exist because it never happened'.
Yet, the online abuse targeted at Taylor across social media showed no signs of waning – from ‘Taylor Swift Is Over Party’ hashtags to Kim Kardashian posting snake emojis (reportedly a reference to the 26-year-old singer).
But, in a bold new move for Instagram, Taylor’s now been given the right to automatically delete negative messages on the photo-sharing site for the first time ever, according to The Times.
‘We're always looking for ways to help people have a positive experience with comments on Instagram,’ a statement read. ‘We're currently focused on providing tools to improve accounts with the most high-volume comment threads, and we will use our learnings to continue to improve the comment experience on Instagram’.
Note the wording here. ‘High-volume comment threads’.
Translation: If you are the second most popular person on Instagram, with 86.6million followers (like Swifty), you get first dibs on the new feature that could shape the way we consume social media.
Currently the platform allows users to individually remove abusive comments, but us mere mortals may have to wait some time until we can use this new censoring feature ourselves.
