There’s lots of things that can surprise you when you move into your new student accommodation. Rats, for instance. Or mould. Or finding out your flatmate steals food. What you probably don’t expect to happen, is to discover that you’re living somewhere that used to be occupied by one of the world’s greatest musicians.
This is, you’ll have guessed by now, exactly what happened to three UCL students last week.
'I was looking at the virtual tour and there were like annotations to it and I saw things that used the name Amy on it like "Amy’s fridge where she used to pin up drawings she made" and stuff and was like "who tf is Amy?’” one of the third year students, Katie, told The Tab.
Along with two housemates, Katie has just moved into the ex-residence of none other than: Amy Winehouse. The singer, who famously spent most of her life in Camden, lived in the flat before moving to Camden Place - where she died tragically in 2011. Initially Mitch Winehouse lived in the Camden Place property but it was then put on the market for £2.7million in May 2012.
Camden Place has become something of a shrine to the late singer, with the local council reportedly shelling out thousands of pounds to replace the street signs that are regularly stolen from there by overzealous fans. The student's accommodation in Prowse Place is a little more conspicuous, and was just casually listed on RightMove.
The students plan to make the most of living in such an iconic place, with one of the other students adding: 'It’s pretty novel living in Amy’s old place and I’m pretty hyped about the house party potential.'
Ummm. Cool, thanks student guy. Stay classy.
