Strictly Come Dancing is a big deal this year. Not that it ever isn't a big deal, but with nothing else to look forward to, the country has been enthralled by the likes of Bill Bailey, HRVY and Nicola Adams strutting their stuff on the dancefloor. (In fact, according to The Sun, the BBC reportedly refused to push back the time of Saturday's episode when Downing Street were faffing around with their press conference).
But the big question is, with the country being plunged into a second lockdown, will Strictly be able to continue? We don't really know, if we're being honest - and the BBC has said they 'will continue to adhere to government guidelines'.
Thankfully, it should be able to continue under the current guidelines, which are more relaxed than they were in March. The Prime Minister people has said that people should work from home, if they can – but also said that workplaces can remain open if that isn't possible. And, obviously, Elstree Studios, where Strictly is filmed, is a workplace - where you can't exactly work from home if you're on the dancefloor or working a camera.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has also tweeted about what the changes mean for the entertainment industry. And it sounds like Strictly should come out unscathed. 'The changes mean people should WFH where possible,' he wrote. 'But where this is not possible, travel to a place of work will be permitted – e.g. this includes (but not exhaustive) elite sport played behind closed doors, film & tv production, telecoms workers.'
The show has already adapted to the pandemic, as the contestants and crew isolated for two weeks at home before they started working on the show. And only small bubbles, seated apart, are allowed in the studio audience. Also, for the first time in the show's history, the show has been cut from 13 weeks down to nine.
