Jay-Z and Beyoncé might be the sorts of masterminds who can both stir up the right sort of hype for a joint tour and somehow keep hundreds of people involved in the production of a masterpiece of an album quiet ahead of its surprise release date, but no one was accounting for the publicity that was going to be garnered by that leaked video footage of Solange – Beyoncé's sister, for anyone who lives under a rock – lashing out at Jay-Z in a lift following a Met Ball after-party.
Seriously, while it's probably hard to quantify how much Jay and Bey's record sales have shot up – because they're always pretty high, and the couple have also got some publicity in the form of a viral promo video for this summer's On The Run joint tour - Solange's have risen by 233 per cent.
The singer's work is mainly produced by Dev Hynes, who has worked with the likes of Florence and the Machine and MKS. She sold 2,000 downloads in the week following TMZ's publication of the video, up from 600 the previous week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, reports The Toronto Sun.
For a little perspective, these sales probably pale in significance when you think of the attention and fame Chris Brown achieved only in the wake of him beating Rihanna up after a 2009 pre-Grammys party. Yuck.
But, ending on a more positive note, Beyoncé, Jay and Solange have released a joint statement to say that 'our family has worked through it… we have moved forward as a united family.' Plus, Beyoncé's been Instagramming loads of photos of her and Solange, just to prove everything's good between them. Maybe even better now that Solange can get them all in a round of drinks, right?
