How Daniel Kaluuya Proves That Skins Had The Most Talented Young Cast In TV History

The actor has just won an Oscar, but we've loved him since his days on the teen drama.

Which British show has launched the most international film careers? Is it EastEnders? Don't be silly. Downton Abbey? You must be mistaken. No. Surprisingly, there's one programme from our anarchic teen years that gave the big breaks to an impressive amount of young stars who are now displaying their talents in Hollywood, and that programme is Skins. Yep, Skins. The series, which debuted in 2007, was the first time many of us became aware of a young actor named Daniel Kaluuya, who has just picked up an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah. But he is far from alone. Back then, when he was a mere youth, little did he know that he was rubbing shoulders with several future stars.

First of all, there was Nicholas Hoult. At that point, he was perhaps the best known of the crew of Bristolian party animals, thanks to his performance in Nicholas Hornby adaptation About A Boy. But Skins - in which he played Tony - really solidified his status as a star on the rise, rather than a simple child star. Since then, he starred as Beast in the X Men franchise, in Oscar-winning films The Favourite and Mad Max: Fury Road, and in recent TV hit The Great.

Next: Dev Patel. Dev played Anwar, who definitely danced to the beat of his own drum. After Skins, he was cast in international hit Slumdog Millionaire, but in recent years he has truly proven his talent in front of the camera through an Oscar-nominated turn in Lion, and as the lead in the hilarious Dickens adaptation, David Copperfield.

Dev, Daniel and Nicholas are perhaps the three most successful names in Skins history, but several of their colleagues have given them a run for their money. Kaya Scodelario, who played Tony's sister Effy, starred in the Maze Runner film series and Netflix show Spinning Out. Hannah Murray, who played Cassie, was in Detroit with John Boyega and, of course, played Gilly in Game Of Thrones. Joe Dempsie, who played Chris, was also a regular on that swords and shields show, playing Gendry. And that's just the cast of series 1: actors like Luke Pasqualino and Jack O'Connell, who showed up later, have also done pretty well for themselves.

Was there something in the water on the Skins set? Did the casting team just really have a nose for talent? Or did working together bring out something special in this young cast? Whatever the answer, we approve. Even if seeing them soar makes us realise that our days of teen house parties are definitely behind us.
