If you’re not a fan of going to the theatre, we can guarantee that this news will probably change that - as Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Saunders will be starring in Sister Act The Musical in London next summer. Twenty-eight years after starring in the film, Goldberg will return to the role of Deloris Van Cartier. Meanwhile, Saunders will play Mother Superior, a nun who takes Deloris into her convent when she witnesses a murder.
Sister Act - with Goldberg and Saunders - will run for just 39 performances from 29 July to 30 August at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith. Brenda Edwards, who stars as Deloris during the UK tour, will play the role on Thursday matinee performances.
It’s not the first time Goldberg has starred in the musical over here. The star – who is also producing the show with Jamie Wilson – joined the cast of the original London production as Mother Superior for a limited run in August 2011. However, it will be the first time she has revisited her own part from the hit films.
The newly-adapted musical features music from eight-time Academy Award-winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater. It features hits such as Take Me to Heaven, Raise Your Voice and Spread the Love Around.
Producer Jamie Wilson said: 'It has been so exciting to work with Whoopi, Alan Menken, Douglas Carter Beane and Glenn Slater to revise and refresh Sister Act for this newly-adapted production. This is a very special one-off opportunity created just for London to see one of the most loved actors of our time playing the part she is so famous and so loved for.'
