Ronda Rousey is a mixed martial arts fighter. And she’s really good at her job. So good that she won her last match with a KO after just 34 seconds.
But still, Floyd Mayweather, arguably the most accomplished boxer in the world, won’t acknowledge her.
You see, the pair have history. He refused to acknowledge her before the ESPY awards, where she beat him to become Fighter of the Year. Hence, her response to him after her award win:
Oh, FYI, in case all the showboating about him being an incredible athlete has ever distracted you, Floyd’s been repeatedly arrested, charged and imprisoned for domestic abuse.
But the renowned wife-beater is still to properly acknowledge Ronda. As well as this back-handed compliment: ‘I want to say congratulations to Ronda Rousey and the UFC. You guys have done a tremendous job and I’ve won probably six or seven ESPYs for Fighter of the Year. And I truly believe she deserves it. Congratulations to Ronda Rousey.’
He also explained at a press conference: ‘I’ve yet to see any MMA fighter, or other boxer, make over $300 million in 36 minutes. When she can do that, then call me.’
It shows how much money means to Floyd than the actual (confined to a ring) art of getting into a fight with someone. It could be that Floyd’s looking down on Ronda because she’s an MMA fighter and not a boxer like him. Or it could just be that it’s because she’s a woman.
One fan tweeted that, of course Ronda isn’t as good an athlete as Floyd, because, well duh, she doesn’t get paid as much:
But perhaps that’s exactly why she’s such a great athlete. She’s not fighting for the high-stakes money, or because it’ll get her that much closer to hanging out with 50 Cent or Justin Bieber. Maybe she’s doing it out of the sheer athleticism of the fight?
