Posh boys who are trying to turn their gap yah exploits into a competitive extreme sport aren’t generally our cup of tea, but on the other hand, we do love a creative way to raise money for charity (stop asking us to sponsor your 10K run, people – you’re essentially doing a slightly long fun run in posh trainers, not re-enacting Live Aid).
25-year-old twins Ross and Hugo Turner are preparing to trek to the Arctic next month. And while one (Hugo) will be wearing modern kit, Ross will be wearing gear similar to that worn by (turn-of-the Century Polar explorer) Sir Ernest Shackleton. He will be pulling a specially made 1900s-style sled, and will stick to an early-20th-Century polar expedition diet. The pair have form for this sort of thing – in 2011 they were part of the youngest four-man team to row the Atlantic. So if your pretend boyfriend is likely to be inactive and a little sloth-like, they’re… probably not for you.
The expedition will be followed closely by the Department of Twin Research at King’s College London, which will be using the experiment to study how modern clothes, food and equipment protect the body. The pair are also looking to raise money for Spinal Research after Hugo was nearly paralysed in an accident when he was 17. ‘I was just running into the sea to swim – not jumping off rocks or anything like that,’ he told the BBC. ‘It was super flat, but when I dived in I hit a sandbank and crushed my neck.’
So, all in all, a massive improvement on the zillions of Humanitarians of Tinder we’ve been coming across recently. Also, for those of you who love a fictional boyfriend with a hook, they don’t come much better than this. Also, they’re quite fit, which, let’s face it, is why we’re here.
Vital stats
Age: 25 and…25
From: Devon, currently residing in Wandsworth, London. Obviously.
Significant others? Given that they’re not actually famous, we couldn’t quite bring ourselves to go full-on DEFCON 1 stalker to find this out. Lets assume they’re so dedicated to their charity work/mum that they don’t have time for girlfriends. Until now…
Reasons we love them:
-
There’s two of them. TWO. Got it?
-
They actually seem to care about the cause they’re raising money for. Check out Ross welling up when he recounts his brother’s accident:
They’ve already raised £250,000 for Spinal Research (off the back of their race across the Atlantic) which has got to be worth a cheeky snog, hasn’t it?
