Actress Shailene Woodley was arrested during a peaceful protest in North Dakota against an oil pipeline project that will cross between North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois. And she lived streamed the whole thing on Facebook.
The protest was against a pipeline that will run 1, 186 miles through the four states. The company behind the project, Energy Transport Partners have said it will boost local economies and is a safer option for transporting oil, rather than by rail or road.
Divergent star Shailene and the other environmental protesters however, disagree. They believe the transporting of 570, 000 barrels of oil will not only impact local waterways, but also damage historic sites. Shailene was arrested during a live broadcasting to around 90 thousand viewers, the video has since been shared 73, 660 times.
During the stream Shailene is seen approaching her motor home, which is situated next to what appears to be a riot vehicle, she is then told that the riot police are following her. She is asked to ‘hold on’ by a police officer and told that she is ‘not going anywhere.’ They do not allow her to continue to her vehicle, and instead lead her away in hand cuffs. Shailene makes the claim that she has been singled out from the other 200 protesters because she’s ‘well known’ and has 40,000 people watching her live stream.
According to a Morton County Sheriff’s Department spokesman, she was arrested for ‘criminal trespass and engaging in a riot during a protest at a construction site that involved about 300 people.’ But from the Facebook live, it’s evident that there was no riot, and no mayhem caused by the protest. 27 other people were arrested during the protest on Monday.
