Serena Williams was one of the most high-profile guests at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding - but she seems to have forgotten one of the biggest royal weddings ever. The tennis star was casually being interviewed by supermodel Naomi Campbell with her sister, Venus, for Naomi’s No Filter series when she joked that she had never heard of the former Suits actress.
It might sound awkward, but we're fairly sure Serena was respecting Meghan's privacy (especially after Harry and Meghan wrote to four UK tabloids this week, saying they would no longer deal with them).
It was when Naomi asked whether Serena was happy that her friend Meghan had moved over to LA with Harry, and baby Archie, that it was clear Serena wanted to steer the conversation away. 'I don't know what you're talking about, don't know nothing about that,' she said, diverting the question with the skill of a politician. When Naomi, who laughed, pressed her on it again, she said: 'Never seen her, never heard of her, don't know her’ while giving a whistle.
It's believed that Serena and Meghan first became friends when they met at a Super Bowl party, all the way back in 2010. Since, Meghan has cheered Serena on at Wimbledon and the US Open. And Meghan has also asked Serena for words of wisdom, with the athlete telling Vanity Fair in 2017 that the former royal asked for her advice about dealing with the paparazzi after news of her romance with Harry went public.
In the chat with Naomi and her sister, Serena also talked about how she had one of the most fashionable women in the world - Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue - help pick her wedding dress when she tied the knot with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in 2017. 'You know she’s a special person, and I absolutely completely adore her. And I love being around her,' Serena said. 'First of all, she’s like, “you’re not getting this without me” and I’m like “OK”. Every single sketch and design we sent to her and she gave great feedback, and I’m like “Oh my god you’re so right, that would be really cool and really good". It was really, really awesome.’
