Selena Gomez is set to take some time off to deal with anxiety, panic attacks and depression, which are a side effect of lupus.

In a statement, the 24-year-old said ‘As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I had lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.’

Lupus is an autoimmune disease which causes the immune system to attack and inflame otherwise healthy organs and tissues. Common symptoms of the condition are constant tiredness, rashes and pain in the joints, but can also include mental health problems. The exact cause is unknown.

Selena added, ‘I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best.’

‘I know I am not alone and by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues,’ she finished.

The singer and actress revealed last year that she had undergone chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with the condition.

Selena is currently in the middle of her Revival world tour, although as yet there has been no official announcement about the status of her remaining concert dates. Back in 2013, she was forced to cancel the end of her Stars Dance tour to make time for chemotherapy.

While it can’t have been an easy choice to make, Selena’s decision to put her mental and physical health first should certainly be applauded – and will hopefully inspire others to do the same.
