Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift And Expecting Your Friends To Have The Same Enemies As You

Selena Gomez hastily deleted an Instagram post in support of Kim Kardashian. Perhaps because of that feud?

In case you missed the memo, it’s Selena Gomez{ =nofollow}’s time in the spotlight. The singer has just come back with not one, but two songs, calling out her ex (and now married) boyfriend Justin Bieber. She's looking pretty amazing while doing promo for the tracks, too.

With all this attention on her, it didn’t go unnoticed when yesterday the popstar posted a selfie in a bodysuit created by Kim Kardashian, for years. (It’s a long story, but it’s largely over whether or not Taylor approved the derogatory lyrics about her in West’s track, Famous.)

Succumbing to the pressure of fans – or maybe even Taylor herself – Selena deleted the pic from her Instagram stories and instead uploaded a selfie of the pair. ‘My ride or die,’ she captioned the photo. ‘I would die for this one. Thank you for forever being by my side. You have taught me so much, walked through all of this with me, STAYED and you remind me to be a better, human being. I’m on your side for life [sic].’

Whether or not she was pressured by Taylor, the (kinda) apology shows that Selena thought she had done something wrong. But has she, really? How many expectations should you place on your friend? Just because you’re mates with someone, does that automatically mean that they can’t engage with your enemies?

While some, like Taylor, perhaps, expect it’s a no-go – others think it’s ridiculous to expect your friends to keep the same block list as you. As one fan tweeted, 'Just because she’s Taylor’s friend doesn’t mean she can’t support a product that Kim made, Selena has no beef with Kim, Taylor does.'

And I have to agree. When one of my friends decided to support the business venture of one of my ex-boyfriends on Instagram, I didn’t bat an eyelid. Or even consider messaging her to ask why. Even though she knows we ended on terrible terms – and that he’ll stay on my block list forever – I respect the fact that she’s free to have other friendships, even if they’re not ones I exactly approve of. Similarly, I hope my friends think the same.

But then, maybe it’s different when you’re broadcasting your support to 159 million Instagram followers.
