When Scout Willis staged her own one-woman protest against Instagram's nipple censorship by baring her breasts and indulging in a spot of window shopping in New York on Tuesday, the Internet didn't know what to do with itself.

But the daughter of Bruce and Demi says she was surprised by the reaction her contribution to the #FreeTheNipple campaign received when she tweeted the topless photos of herself.

'It would be naïve to say I didn’t think it would cause a controversy, a buzz,' Scout said. 'But never did I expect the outpouring – both of media attention, as well as incredibly positive support.'

In fact, the 22-year-old, who had a breast reduction several years ago – 'It completely changed my relationship to my body. I love my breasts so much' – says the people of New York couldn't have given two hoots whether she was buying groceries without a shirt on or not. 'People were really blasé about it,' Scout told Page Six.

Although she admitted that not everybody was a fan of her campaign. 'Some people either aren’t aware enough of the facts to know what it is I’m actually fighting for and talking about, and some people really just don’t want to take me seriously, and would rather write me off as someone who’s just attention-seeking.'

'Everyone says the policy has to be uniform,' she argued. 'Apparently, though it’s OK for women to be degraded and hyper-sexualized, but it’s not OK for them to be proud of their bodies. Some uniform policy bulls**t does not make me OK with that. People are selling heroin on Instagram. People are selling guns. Yet my nipple is the problem.'

We hear ya, Scout.
