Scarlett Johansson is girl-bossing Hollywood right now, and we can’t get enough. Not only has she been the highest paid actress in the world since 2018, but she’s also the third highest grossing box office star of all time, with her films collectively grossing a whopping $14.3 billion worldwide. And now it seems she’s seeing in the new decade with the same success as she heads to the Oscars with an impressive achievement under her belt.
Scarlett is nominated for two Oscars this year, and is only the 12th person ever to receive two nominations for acting in the same year. She is in the running to win Best Actress for her role as an actress-mum going through a turbulent divorce in director Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, and Best Supporting Actress for her role as a single mother in Nazi Germany in Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit.
This is her first time being nominated for an Academy Award despite successes in award-winning films such as Lost in Translation and The Avengers. Her history of playing powerful women clearly doesn’t stop at feisty superheroes, however, as Johansson proves that being a mum can be just as badass in her more recent roles.
Both characters are single mothers, a position that Johansson is personally familiar with as she is to daughter Rose, 5, after splitting with Rose’s father Romain Dauriac in 2016. Johansson spoke of motherhood in a 2015 interview with Australia's The Daily Telegraph: ‘I think having any kind of huge life changing event happen to you, such as having children… is very, very inspiring. I think it will hopefully enrich my work, as well as my understanding of myself. That’s the hope anyway, you never know’. It clearly paid off: these maternal roles have earned her the best reviews of her career.
Upon the news of her nominations, Johansson told Buzzfeed News: ‘working with Noah Baumbach and Taika Waititi, respectively, has given me such deep artistic satisfaction; Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit are two great highlights of my career. I am deeply humbled by the Academy’s recognition of my work which would not have been possible without the support of the incredibly gifted actors and writers/directors that I’ve been so fortunate to collaborate with’.
Now, this mum, record-winning actress, double Oscar nominee will go down in history. Could she make the golden man himself blush Scarlett? We'll see...
