Kim Kardashian Pens Essay Explaining Why She Isn’t A Feminist

Whatever you do, don’t call Kim a feminist.

At a blogger panel a few weeks ago Kim Kardashian revealed she didn’t identify as a feminist. ‘I don't think that I am a feminist. I don't like labels,’ she told the crowd.

Unsurprisingly this didn’t go down too well. To add insult to injury she’s now penned a whole essay on the subject for her website, and - shock horror - has not changed her views on the subject. Yep, she still doesn't think she calls herself a ‘feminist’. Eye roll.

‘For me, feminist is someone who advocates for the civil and social rights and liberties of all people, regardless of their gender; anyone who believes that women should have the same choices and opportunities as men when it comes to education and employment, their bodies and their lifestyles,’ Kim opened the essay.

‘Of course I want these things! I'm all about empowering and uplifting women.'

Sounds rather like feminism to us.

However, despite her seemingly feminist views she insists she doesn't wish to be given the label.

‘But why do we have to put labels on things?’ asks Kim. ‘You're Republican, you're Democrat, you're bisexual, you're plus-size, you're poor, you're a criminal, you're a mother, you're a feminist.’

‘I feel that being grouped or labeled can create separation between people who do (or don't) fall into certain categories, when they may actually share many of the same beliefs and goals. It's simply a personal choice that I don't like the idea of being labeled.’

While speaking at the BlogHer 16 conference on Friday, Kim Kardashian revealed that she doesn't think of herself as a feminist.

'I don't think that I am a feminist. I don't like labels. I do what makes me happy and I want women to be confident. I am so supportive of women. I love nothing more than when I'm with all my friends and I love to support women but I'm not a 'free the nipple-type' of girl. If you're not comfortable with that, don't do it! I'm not about the labels. Just be you and be confident in you.'

Just last week Sarah Jessica Parker shared a very similar view on the subject.

In an interview with Marie Claire US, SGP has once again shared her thoughts on the topic of gender-equality.

When asked whether she classifies herself as a feminist she responded: ‘I am not a feminist. I don't think I qualify.’

‘I believe in women and I believe in equality, but I think there is so much that needs to be done that I don't even want to separate it anymore. I'm so tired of separation. I just want people to be treated equally,’ she continued.

We’re not entirely sure what she means by this but it sounds rather a lot like feminism to us, the idea of men and women being treated equal and all that.

In the same interview, somewhat contradictorily to her initial remarks, she offers what seems like a feminist stance on the issue of the gender pay gap.

‘I would like all of that nonsense to end. I would like women to get paid for the value of their contributions, not by old-fashioned ideas about gender.’

Parker’s comments do not come as much of a surprise considering the views she has previously expressed on this very subject. In an interview with Cosmopolitan last year, Parker identified herself as a humanist because ‘it's not just women anymore’.

‘People of colour, gays, lesbians, and transgenders who are carving out this space. I'm not spitting in the face or being lazy about what still needs to be done — but I don't think it's just women anymore. We would be so enormously powerful if it were a humanist movement.’

Oh dear SGP. While Parker may be in a minority when it comes to rejecting the title of ‘feminist’, she is not the only celebrity who has shown their discomfort with the term. Earlier this year Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams told Entertainment Weekly that she thought the term was outdated.

‘We should stop calling feminists ‘feminists’ and just start calling people who aren’t feminist ‘sexist’ – and then everyone else is just a human. You are either a normal person or a sexist.’
