On the morning of Sunday 5th September the world very sadly lost Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding at the age of 39, following a battle with breast cancer. Her mum, Marie, announced the news on Instagram, writing: 'It’s with deep heartbreak that today I’m sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away. Many of you will know of Sarah’s battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day. She slipped away peacefully this morning. I’d like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year.' Last August{ =nofollow}, Sarah shared with fans her diagnosis, saying that the cancer had spread to other parts of her body, and earlier this year, she said doctors had told her she wouldn't see another Christmas.

Bright, bold, beautiful - and very funny - Sarah left her mark on British pop culture, whether that was on stage with Girls Aloud, winning Celebrity Big Brother{ =nofollow}in 2017 or her various acting roles (including her iconic performances in the St Trinians films). The singer leaves behind a legion of fans, and loads of friends, some of whom have paid tribute to the star on social media.

The band's Nicola Roberts praised Sarah, too, writing: 'Electric girl, you made us. You gave it everything and still with a smile. A white butterfly flew past my window this morning before I knew, it must have been you.'

Sarah embarked on her journey to fame by applying for talent show Popstars: The Rivals back in 2002, where she was placed in a girlgroup with the other members of Girls Aloud. 'So so sad to hear about Sarah,' Davina McCall, the host of the show wrote. 'A star from the get go, hugely fun and outgoing yet also somehow fragile.' Fellow judge and Spice Girl Geri Horner also said on Twitter: 'Rest in peace, Sarah Harding. You'll be remembered for the light and joy you brought to the world. X'
