Radio stations in San Francisco have decided they won’t be playing Lorde’s song Royals until the baseball World Series is over, because the song is actually inspired by a rival baseball team.

104.5 KFOG and 96.5 KOIT have both put the kibosh on the track’s airplay for now, after listeners contacted the station saying it was disloyalto play the track in advance of the upcoming San Francisco Giants v Kansas City Royals game.

It’s kind of fair enough when you think about the fact that the song wasn’t inspired by the monarchy or old money aristocrats, but actually came about after Lorde spotted a National Geographic cover featuring Kansas City Royals baseball legend George Brett in his team jersey.

‘I was like, I really like that word, because I'm a big word fetishist. I'll pick a word and I'll pin an idea to that,’ she told VH1 last year.

In fact, she invited the legendary baseball third baseman to a show a few months ago in Las Vegas and posed for pictures with him, which were shared on the Major League baseball’s Twitter feed. She’d reportedly invited him to shows prior to that but he’d never been able to make it. However, he did send her an autographed jersey when she played in Kansas City, and wrote ‘Lorde, you are Royal to me’ on it.

The 17-year-old singer is currently preparing for the release of the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack, which she curated with the help of Diplo and Charli XCX among others.
