Sam Taylor-Johnson's relationship with her husband, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has been the subject of considerable press attention since the pair first got together in 2009. The reason? There is a 23 year age gap between the pair: the Fifty Shades of Grey director recently celebrated her 50th birthday, while Aaron will turn 27 this month.
Were things the other way round, of course, it's unlikely that the media would have batted an eyelid: such is the double standard that the age gap between Donald and Melania Trump is barely commented upon, yet French President Emmanuel Macron is forced to defend his relationship with his older wife, Brigitte in the face of vicious criticism and innuendo.
According to the acclaimed director, who has most recently lent her talents to Netflix's new psychological thriller Gypsy, the happy couple don't notice the age gap, and remain unphased by other people's opinions.
'When you're solid with someone in your own love, you don't think about it,' Sam told The Sunday Times.
Sam and Aaron met on the set of her 2009 film Nowhere Boy, in which the actor starred as a young John Lennon, and announced their engagement shortly after. The couple married at Babington House in June 2012, and have two daughters together, Wylda Rae (six) and Romy Hero (four), as well as two children from Sam's previous marriage.
While some of Sam's friends may not have been open-minded when it came to her relationship, the director and artist cared not. 'I could predict who was going to take a step back and who was going to say, "Are you happy? Great,"' she said. 'I didn't really care: people could have protested and I would have been, like "whatever." I was in it so deep.'
'You may have noticed, I never care about anything that anyone says. I've always been fearless in my work and in my relationships.'
