We've all been there. It's a big night ahead, and you've got the perfect dress. Perhaps you've been searching for it for weeks. Perhaps you've saved for months to afford it. And then, disaster strikes: a seam pops. A button pops. And your fantasy evening is endangered by a wardrobe malfunction. But have some sympathy for Salma Hayek. She experienced a similar problem with her actual Oscars dress. Can you imagine?
Salma made the revelation this week at the National Board of Review Awards Gala, held in New York on Wednesday. With Renee Zellweger among the guests, Salma took a trip down memory lane and explained that the Bridget Jones actress had once come to her aid, when they were both nominated for an Oscar in 2003.
'The night before, my big butt exploded the seams of my Oscar dress and I had no dress for the Oscars,' Hayek recalled.
'She ended up giving me one of her dresses that, thank God, was wide here', she pointed to her bum, 'and stretchy here', she pointed to her cleavage. 'That’s what I wore for that night.'
The gown in question was a gorgeous dress designed by Carolina Herrera, composed of a floor-length white skirt and a black lace bodice. Salma looked fantastic, but we can't help but wonder: what was she supposed to wear originally?
Salma was nominated that year for playing Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist, in biopic Frida. Renee was nominated for her role of Roxy Hart in Chicago. Alas, neither was victorious, with Nicole Kidman taking the prize for her performance in The Hours.
'I really wish that they would have a tie so that we could both win, but we both lost,' Salma recalled with a laugh. Renee, however, had another shot, and won an Oscar for Cold Mountain soon after. She's also expected to be recognised for her role in Judy.
Fingers crossed Salma will get another chance in future and that, this time, her dress doesn't explode!
