It was inevitable that after a controversial first week in office (it was never going to be a good start when an entire gender is protesting against you), newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump was going to be a hot topic of conversation at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

After all, Hollywood has made no secret of its animosity towards the politican - with Meryl Streep using her Golden Globes acceptance speech to tear him down (he responded in his usual fashion - on Twitter) and many voicing their support for his rival Hillary Clinton during the campaign trail. Likewise, he's been vocal about his dislike for Hollywood.

Last night's awards ceremony saw several A-listers taking the opportunity to get political, being particularly outspoken when it came to Trump's widely condemned #MuslimBan, which temporarily prevents nationals from seven Muslim countries from entering the USA, and bans all Syrian refugees from seeking asylum indefinitely.

Here are the stars who took a stance against Trump last night.

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington was one star who chose to wear her heart on her sleeve, almost literally, when she donned a safety pin showing her support for those being affected by Trump's #MuslimBan. Writing on Instagram, she said: 'I'll be wearing one of these tonight. On my arm. To show solidarity. We will not stop fighting for our safety & the safety of our fellow citizens and human beings. #NoBanNoWall #safetypin.'

Speaking from the audience before the show got underway, the actress added: 'A lot of people are saying right now that actors shouldn't express their opinions when it comes to politics, but the truth is actors are activists no matter what because we embody the worth and humanity of all people.'

Emma Stone

Emma Stone used her acceptance speech for Best Female Actor in La La Land to show her appreciation for the protesting spirit of Hollywood.

‘We’re in a really tricky time in the world and our country and things are very inexcusable and scary and need action,' she said. 'I’m so grateful to be part of a group of people that cares and that wants to reflect things back to society.’

Stranger Things' David Harbour

One of the most rousing calls to arms came from Stranger Things star David Harbour, who declared 'We will hunt the monsters!' in a direct link to the hit show. Chanelling the spirit of the fan favourite series, he urged everyone to protect 'freaks and outcasts, those who have no home'.

‘And when we are at a loss amidst the hypocrisy and the casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will, as per Chief Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the weak and the disenfranchised and the marginalised!,' he continued. 'And we will do it all with soul, with heart, and with joy. We thank you for this responsibility.’

Mahershala Ali

Best Supporting Actor Mahershala Ali shared his own experiences as a Muslim in his speech, tearing up as he said: 'I think what I've learned in my experiences on Moonlight is that we see what happens when you persecute people. They fold in to themselves, and what I was so grateful about in having the opportunity to play Wan was playing a gentlemen who saw a young man folding into himself because of the persecution of his community and taking that opportunity to uplift him and tell him that he mattered and that he was okay and accept him and I hope we do a better job of that.'

'When we get caught up in the minutiae, the details that make us all different, there's two ways of seeing that,' he continued. 'You can see the texture of that person, the qualities that make them unique, or you can go to war about it, say, 'That person is different from me, I don't like you, so let's battle.' My mother is an ordained minister, I'm a Muslim. She didn't do backflips when I called her to tell her I converted 17 years ago. But I tell you now, we put things to the side, I'm able to see her, she's able to see me, we love each other, the love has grown. That stuff is minutiae. It's not that important.'

Bryan Cranston

On the red carpet, he told the BBC: 'We have to remember that we have hard-fought civil liberties to protect, and if there's something that I can do to help that, I will.'

Taylor Schilling

Accepting the award for Best TV Comedy Ensemble for Orange is the New Black, Taylor Schilling said: ‘We stand up here representing a diverse group of people, generations of families who have sought a better life here.’

The Big Bang Theory's Simon Helberg

The Big Bang Theory star made his feelings towards the #MuslimBan known by holding a sign saying 'Refugees Welcome'. His wife Jocelyn Towne one upped him by writing her messages - 'Let Them In' - on her chest.

Ashton Kutcher

Ashton Kutcher made a dig at Trump's controversial Muslim Ban by saying in his opening speech as host, 'I welcome everyone in airports that belong in my America.'

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

The Veep actress acknowledged her own heritage as an immigrant of parents fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe, saying: ‘This immigrant ban is a blemish and it is un-American.’

Dev Patel

‘I just flew in from India a day ago,' he said. 'When I heard the news it was utterly devastating. The first thing that came into my head was the children who arrive on these shores with hope in their hearts. It’s horrible. It’s divisive. I hope something changes and something can be done because it really is terrible.'
