Remember George Zimmerman? He's the man who was acquitted of murdering unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin back in July 2013, citing self-defence. The controversial ruling led to campaigns across America seeking justice for what was widely believed to be a racially-motivated attack.
Well, just when you were wondering what had happened to Zimmerman, he's back in the news, but not necessarily for the reason you'd expect. He's just signed a contract to take part in a fight in an upcoming charity boxing match next month - and it seems some in the rap world are eager to be his opponent in the ring.
As The Game puts it: ‘I would not be boxing for me, I'd be boxing for the legacy of Trayvon Martin and for his family. I would box him to knock him out. I would definitely take pleasure in it.
Perhaps not quite as kind was the response from rapper DMX, also putting his name forward: ‘I am going to beat the living fuck out him. I am breaking every rule in boxing to make sure I fuck him right up.'
As expected, this story is becoming a media circus in the States. So much so that some are saying that it's making them feel uncomfortable that Zimmerman is now some sort of pop culture celebrity. They've got a point: given the emotionally charged response surrounding this case in the first place it doesn't seem exactly sensible to put Zimmerman and anyone together in a boxing ring.
