Kristen Stewart, Chloe Moretz and Juliette Binoche all star in The Clouds Of Sils Maria, a film about an actress a bit past the peak of her career given the task of reviving a play that gave her a big break 20 years ago. However, she’s got to play the role of the older woman, while a younger starlet is drafted in to play the role she once played. And what is the younger role? Well, she’s the girl who drives the older woman to suicide.
We’re getting intense All About Eve/Black Swan vibes here, as it seems that the lines between fact and fiction become blurred, and a beguiling Chloe Moretz is the meanest mean girl we’ve ever seen her. Oh, and did we mention that Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche are lovers in this film? There’s a crafty shot of Kristen in a thong in the trailer, too, which you can view below here:
As well as getting rave reviews at Cannes, it also seems like the perfect way of reigniting the debate about the ageism affecting actresses over 40. Or maybe reigniting's the wrong word - as it's never really gone away; Joan Collins recently bragged she defies the ‘old cliché’ of a lack of roles for older women in film, and Kathleen Turner’s complained this month that ‘the really meaty roles for women my age are all in theatre’ and not in film.
