When Ryan Gosling thanked his ‘sweetheart’ Eva Mendes in his Golden Globes acceptance speech, after winning the Best Actor award for his all-singing, all-dancing performance in La La Land, our hearts soared. But though the star credited his wife for her support while ‘raising [their] daughter, pregnant with her second,’ it seems he forgot to mention something intriguing: that Eva actually came up with one of the hit musical’s most memorable lines.
‘“L.A. worships everything and values nothing.” That was something my lady said to me one day, and I thought it was so funny I asked her if I could put it in the movie,’ Ryan told Entertainment Tonight at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
‘She was kidding, but it's a funny thing to say. I loved when she said it, because it's funny enough to have some truth to it, you know? But it's obviously a joke, so it just seemed appropriate for the movie,’ he explained.
Ryan and Eva, who are parents to two young daughters, famously choose to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, which means that red carpet outings as a couple are a rarity. When asked by Entertainment Tonight whether his wife would accompany him to the Academy Awards later this month, to celebrate Ryan’s first nomination in the Best Actor category, he remained vague, brushing off the question with ‘Oh, I’m not sure. It’s still a little while away.’
In his much-shared Golden Globes speech, Ryan credited his performance to his ‘lady,’ Eva, revealing that ‘while [he] was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with her second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.’
‘If she hadn’t have taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today.,’ he continued, before dedicating his win to the memory of Eva’s brother, Juan Carlos Mendez, who died in 2016.
