Anyone who can legitimately wear a denim thong in a music video and (almost) get away with it deserves some fashion kudos in our book and we’re not the only ones who think so, because fancypants organisation the Council of Fashion Designers of America have just announced they’re awarding Rihanna the ‘Fashion Icon Award.’ Go, RiRi.

The award, which will be presented to her at a ceremony on 2 June, is kind of a big deal and has previously been won by Kate Moss, Iman and Lady Gaga. According to the CFDA, the award is given to ‘an individual whose style has made a significant impact on popular culture on an international stage.’ Denim thongs aside, we’re pretty sure Rihanna's smash hit collection at River Island, an advertising campaign at Balenciaga and more Vogue covers than you can shake a stick at haven't done her any harm – she’s pretty much fashion royalty already.

But Rihanna’s good news doesn’t stop there, because apparently Simon Cowell is ‘desperate’ to get her on the panel for this year’s UK’s X Factor.

A source says: 'Simon and Cheryl have two months to find someone to sit in that chair and they want to get the right person. This year is an important one for The X Factor. Simon can’t be complacent and has to come back with a real A Team. Rihanna would be a shock selection because she is not an obvious choice for a family show – but that’s what he wants.'

'Now, obviously, we are right in the middle of X Factor rumour season, so it might be wise to take this ‘source's’ comments with a pinch of salt, but Rihanna did arrive in Heathrow yesterday, so there’s a chance she’s here for meetings with Simon Cowell about appearing on the show. Or is she here to catch Drake’s upcoming shows at the O2 Arena? Only time will tell...
