In the world of celebrity, break-ups often lead to big kiss-and-tell deals in the tabloids, or an attempt by the injured party to share their pain via books or reality TV appearances. Some, however, prefer to stay out of the limelight completely. One of these individuals is Renate Blauel, ex-wife of Sir Elton John. For years, she has maintained a respectful silence about her union with the music icon. Now, however, she has launched legal action against him, apparently concerning revelations he made about her in his 2019 autobiography.
According to reports, Renate – who he met in the Eighties when she was working as a sound engineer - has launched legal proceedings at the High Court, filing the paperwork last week. She is requesting an injunction against Sir Elton, 73. A lawyers speaking on her behalf stated that she 'hopes to resolve the matter privately and amicably.'
The pair met in 1983, when Sir Elton was recording album Two Low For Zero.
They then married on Valentine’s Day, 1984, and the pair divorced in 1988. It is thought to have been amicable, but The Sun states that Renate is unhappy with details of their union being printed in the book, despite her singing a non-diclosure agreement following their split.
‘Lawyers thrashed out a deal over what could and could not be included’, The Sun states. ‘But now German Renate is seeking an official ruling.’
In the book, Sir Elton acknowledged this agreement. ‘At this point, I should say that Renate and I agreed when we divorced that we would never publicly discuss the intimate details of our marriage. And I am respecting that. The truth is, I don’t have anything bad to say about Renate at all. Nor does anyone else who met her.’ She was depicted in the hit biopic, Rocketman, in which she was portrayed by actress Celinde Schoenmaker.
In 2017, he referred to that spell of life when discussing gay marriage in Australia. ‘I wanted more than anything to be a good husband,’ he said. ‘But I denied who I really was, which caused my wife sadness, and caused me huge guilt and regret.’
He married Canadian producer David Furnish in 2014, having been in a relationship with him since 1993, and the pair have two sons.
