After Margot Robbie read Brad Pitt’s acceptance speech, where she joked about Brexit and Prince Harry, the stakes for speeches at the BAFTAs were high. But Rebel Wilson might have just performed the most outrageous speech of the night. The actress was handing out the award for best director, when she took aim at the fact that no women were nominated in the category.
Reading a list of the men nominated, she said: ‘I honestly don't think I could do it, I don't have the balls.’ The award went to Sam Mendes for 1917.
Rebel also took the opportunity to take aim at box-office flop Cats, which she starred in. Rebel, who was wearing a contrast black and red sequin dress from Prabal Gurung, said, ‘The red is from that one time I didn’t win Miss Australia. And the black is from a funeral I just went to for the feature film Cats.’ As if it wasn’t clear enough how much she regrets starring in the film, she added, ‘Cats. Strangely not nominated for any awards. Even in this best director CATegory.’
But, perhaps the most controversial parts of her speech were when she joked about Prince Andrew and coronavirus. ‘It's really great to be here at the Royal Andrew… Royal Albert Hall,’ she said, starting her speech. Later, she then held a BAFTA to her face, saying it was a good way to protect against the Coronavirus.
Earlier in the evening, Brad Pitt wasn't there to accept his award for best supporting actor – and co-star Margot Robbie read his acceptance speech. He joked about Brexit, saying: 'Hey Britain, heard you just became single, welcome to the club. Hope you get the best of the divorce settlement.'
And at the end of the speech, Margot said that Brad planned to call the award Harry (after Prince Harry, obvs): 'He said he’s naming this Harry because he’s really excited about bringing it back to the States for him.' As the camera panned to Kate and Wills, Margot insisted that they were Brad's words and not hers.
