Netflix series The Crown has become a runaway success since it first aired in 2016, with the early exploits of the Queen and her family providing excellent fodder for binge-watching. Now, it has been revealed by one of its stars Vanessa Kirby that even the Queen herself is a fan – after her friend overheard Princess Eugenie talking about it.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar for the June issue, Kirby revealed the excellent titbit, saying: ‘A friend of mine was at a party and didn’t know anyone, so he sidled up to this group who were talking about The Crown. One girl said, ‘Well, my granny watches it and really likes it’. It slowly dawned on him that the girl was Eugenie and her granny was the Queen.’
Last year, a royal source revealed the same, crediting the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward and his wife Sophie of Wessex for the monarch’s viewing habits: ‘Edward and Sophie love The Crown. It has been a long-standing arrangement that they drive to Windsor at the weekend to join the Queen for an informal supper while watching TV or a film. They have a Netflix account and urged her to watch it with them. Happily, she really liked it, although obviously there were some depictions of events that she found too heavily dramatised.’
Unfortunately, Prince Philip doesn’t share his wife’s taste in television, with Kirby saying: ‘We’ve heard that Philip doesn’t watch it – he can’t be bothered.’
The third series of The Crown will air next year, and will star Olivia Colman as the Queen, Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip.
