A new portrait of the Queen and her husband Prince Philip has been released to mark the monarch’s 90th birthday.
The image was taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz at the couple’s home, Windsor Castle, and is the final picture in the series of portraits released to mark the occasion.
As in the previously released portraits, which included images of Her Majesty with her great-grandchildren – including Prince George and Princess Charlotte – and her much-loved corgis, the Queen wears a pastel pink cardigan and a striped shirt. She is joined by her husband of 68 years, Prince Philip, who celebrates his 95th birthday today.
Didn’t the Queen only just have her birthday, you say? Well, yes – the actual date of her birth was 21st April 1926. But because she’s the Queen, she has an official birthday which is celebrated every year in June, although the date has changed throughout her reign. Confused yet?
Every year, the Queen kick starts the celebrations with a thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, followed by the Trooping the Colour and an RAF fly past over Buckingham Palace. So fancy.
She’ll also release the Queen’s Birthday Honours List – those recognised last year included Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Lenny Henry.
Members of the public are encouraged to get involved with the celebrations by organising street parties across the country.
