The image depicts the Queen decked in sapphire jewels given to her by father King George VI as a wedding gift in 1947. Her necklace features 16 oblong sapphires surround by diamonds, which she added to a tiara and bracelet also gifted to her by her father.

At the time of the commission Bailey explained how he has, ‘always been a huge fan of the Queen’. He explained: "She has very kind eyes with a mischievous glint. I've always liked strong women, and she is a very strong woman."

The portrait was among a series taken by Bailey in 2014 in celebration of the Queen’s 88th birthday.

Yet it must be remembered that today also marks the death of the Queen's late father who passed away aged just 56. Royal sources have revealed that Her Majesty will therefore spend the day in 'quiet reflection' at Sandringham.
