Scarlett Johansson has spoken out about the dangers of the paparazzi, claiming that another another incident “likePrincess Diana” is set to happen if they don’t change their ways. Speaking about her own experience, 2018's highest-paid actress said she was pursued by a group of five paps - in blacked out cars - following an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! adding that it’s ‘a waiting game before another person gets seriously injured or killed, like Princess Diana.’ The star also told how, after the incident, she visited a police station (it appears that no crime was reported, though.)
The star of Avengers: Endgame issued a statement, which read, ‘The paparazzi consistently go to increasingly dangerous lengths to stalk and harass the people they are photographing. Even after Princess Diana’s tragic death, the laws were never changed to protect targets from the lawless paparazzi.’
She added, ‘Women across the US are stalked, harassed and frightened and a universal law to address stalking must be at the forefront of law enforcement conversations.’
Celebrity news outlets are protected under the first amendment in America, which upholds freedom of the press - but, different states have laws on paps, for example in California it is illegal to take pictures of celebrities’ children in a harassing manner, The Guardian reports.
Hopefully, now that one of the most powerful women in the entertainment industry has spoken out - maybe something can begin to change. Being in the public eye shouldn’t mean you are fair game to being stalked or having your life put in jeopardy, just because somewhere wants to publish your photos. It’s a lame excuse for bad behaviour that, in 2019, just shouldn’t be valid anymore; a photo might speak a thousand words, but it certainly isn’t worth anybody's safety.
