This year sadly marks two decades since Princess Diana’s tragic passing. And in order to remember her philanthropic endeavours, plans are in place for a year-long celebration of the ‘people’s princess’.
The Diana Award, a charity established to continue the late princess’s work with young people, will host a series of events in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary.
According to E! News, events will include a newly founded holiday entitled ‘National Kindness Day’, an app and a new international honour titled the Inaugural Legacy Award, dedicated to 20 young people who have excelled in pursuing positive social change.
Earl Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, will host a gala fundraiser for the award at his family home in June. This will coincide with an exhibition entitled ‘Walking In Her Shoes’.
And it has finally been confirmed that Princes William and Harry will take part in the celebrations. This Thursday, the brothers will present the Inaugural Legacy Award to 20 recipients. Those chosen, are aged between nine to 18, and have demonstrated 'kindness, compassion and service to others', according to the website.
The princes' involvement is not surprising however, as they have recently been vocal about their mother’s passing. A few months ago, the Duke of Cambridge visited an East London bereavement centre with Kate Middleton for example. He spoke to a nine-year-old girl who had recently lost her father to cancer.
The prince spoke about losing his mother and offered advice as he told her, "You know I lost my mummy when I was very young too. I was 15 and my brother was 12. So we lost our mummy when we were young as well.”
He continued: "Do you speak about your daddy? It's very important to talk about it, very, very important."
And Prince Harry also spoke out about struggling to deal with the loss of his mother at the tender age of 12 in his ITV documentary, Prince Harry In Africa.
He told ITV’s Tom Bradby: "I never really dealt with what had happened. It was a lot of buried emotion. For a huge part of my life I didn’t really want to think about it."
The anniversary of Princess Diana’s death is on August 31 2017.
