The funeral for Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, will be held on Saturday 17 April at 3pm at St George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle following his sad, but peaceful, passing last Friday. Due to Covid restrictions, the funeral will have a guest list of only 30 people, including the Queen and other members the Royal Family.
As the nation has come togetherto grieve the death of Prince Philip over the last week, we’ve been given glimpses into his extraordinary 99 years – 73 of which he spent married to the Queen. Prince Philip, who was born in Greece, first met the then-Princess Elizabeth at a visit to Dartmouth Naval College when he was only 18-years-old. From then on, Princess Elizabeth was steadfast in her affections and ‘never looked at anyone else.’ The couple announced their engagement on 9 July 1947, and were married on 20 November at Westminster Abbey.
Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth had four children, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The Duke of Edinburgh spent his seven decades by the Queen’s side as her ‘strength and stay.’ Addressing Parliament on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee, the Queen stated, ‘During these years as your Queen, the support of my family has, across the generations, been beyond measure.’
‘Prince Philip is, I believe, well known for declining compliments of any kind. But throughout [my reign] he has been a constant strength and guide.’
And while we are probably used to viewing Prince Philip as a grown man, standing beside his wife, he actually lived quite an incredible life even before becoming the Duke of Edinburgh. From his early years in Greece to his career in the navy, these are the best pictures from Prince Philip’s early years, showing his remarkable life.
