When Prince Louis was born, the date felt pretty appropriate. April 23rd – St George’s Day – seems perfect for a child who is sixth in line to the throne. And as his family prepare to celebrate his second birthday in style, they have released charming new portraits of the young prince.

The images see little Louis in a blue and white gingham shirt, hands covered in bright paint. Some have stated that the colours are a nod to the rainbow tributes many are posting to show support for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic. The photos were taken by The Duchess of Cambridge earlier this month, and are the latest of many snaps she has shot of her children and released on special occasions.

With The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - in lockdown in Anmer Hall in Norfolk, it will be a tough time to celebrate. But they will surely mark the occasion with the usual cake and balloons (Kate is, after all, a keen baker.) A cake will provide the opportunity for Louis to enjoy Happy Birthday, which Kate has described as ‘one of Louis's favourite songs.’ She made the revelation earlier this year, as she hosted a reception for Place2Be, a mental health charity.

There will also inevitably be a few video calls with absent family. Speaking to the BBC earlier this month, Kate addressed William and said ‘I think your father [Prince Charles] and my parents [Carole and Michael Middleton] and our families have really loved keeping in touch with the children, because it's really hard. It gets a bit hectic, I am not going to lie, with a two-year-old.’

Charles may struggle to stay on the line, though. ‘For some reason he sees the red button and he always wants to press the red button’, William added.

In only a few weeks, there’ll be further cause for celebration. Archie – son of Harry and Meghan - turns one in May.

Happy Birthday Louis!
