Prince Harry is set to guest edit an episode of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, to be broadcast in the period between Christmas and New Year.

According to Kensington Palace, the prince is set to use this opportunity to highlight the issues that are closest to him, including mental health.

‘Prince Harry is grateful to have Today’s considerable reach to shine a spotlight on a number of issues that are close to his heart,’ a Palace spokesperson said a statement. ‘He is working closely with the Today team to produce segments on a range of topics, including youth violence, conservation and mental health.’

It’s the 14th year that the Today programme has handed over editorship to public figures over the Christmas period, and Prince Harry is not the first royal to turn journalist: Sarah Ferguson, the then Duchess of York, was a guest editor back in 2004.

Other guest editors for 2017’s festive editions include the Conservative peer Baroness Trumpington, Tamara Rojo, the artistic director of the English National Ballet, and Booker Prize-winning author Ben Okri. A special ‘robot’ edition of the show will, according to the BBC, ‘use Artificial Intelligence to conduct an interview through a journalist modelled on current presenter Mishal Husain.

Sarah Sands, editor of Today, said: ‘We are delighted by the range of guest editors this year. This Christmas tradition allows our listeners to benefit from the experiences and perspectives of remarkable public figures.’

‘We finish with a programme dedicated to AI which gives a glimpse of the future of Today,’ she added. The dates for the special editions of Today are yet to be confirmed, so watch this space.

Prince Harry follows in the footsteps of his older brother and sister-in-law: earlier this year, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge paid a visit to BBC Radio 1, where they joined Greg James for the broadcast of his Friday chart show to spread awareness of their Heads Together mental health campaign.
