After meeting each other’s families, exchanging matching bracelets and appearing in public in his and hers beanies, Prince Harry and his girlfriend Meghan Markle have reached another important milestone in their relationship.

On Tuesday, the pair spent their first Valentine’s Day together, but instead of showering each other in roses or heading off on a showy minibreak, it seems that the couple chose to keep things low key.

Speaking to Us WeeklyUs Weekly, a source close to the royals revealed that ‘Harry and Meghan are together at Kensington Palace […] She and Harry [stayed] in for Valentine’s.’ No word on whether they ordered Deliveroo and watched Netflix, though.

Another source adds that Meghan has been staying at Nottingham Cottage, Harry’s home at Kensington Palace, since December last year. ‘It’s become Meghan’s home away from home,’ they said. ‘All the security know her, she slips in and out whenever she likes.’

Earlier this month, the couple were photographed holding hands after heading to Soho House for a dinner date, with an onlooker revealing to The Sun that Meghan and Harry ‘tried to keep as low-key as possible and were sitting in a small snug area of the restaurant […] They only had eyes for each other.’

Timed to coincide with Valentine’s Day, this week Meghan’s lifestyle website The Tig republished a piece written by the actress back in 2015, in which she detailed her (very different) Valentine’s plans for that year.

In the essay, Meghan emphasises the importance of ‘self love,’ writing: ‘I think you need to be your own Valentine. I think you need to cook that beautiful dinner even when it’s just you, wear your favourite outfit, buy yourself some flowers. And celebrate the self love that often gets muddled when we focus on what we don’t have.’

She continues: ‘This Valentine’s Day I will be with friends, running amock through the streets of New York, likely imbibing some cocktail that’s oddly pink, and jumping over icy mounds in my new shoes through the salted snowy streets of the West Villages.’ Whimsical, no?

‘But those shoes, by the way, were my gift to myself. Because I’ve worked hard, because I’m not going to wait for someone to buy me the things I covet (nor do I want to), and because I want to treat myself as well as I treat those dearest to me. Because I am my own funny Valentine.’
