Romance is alive and well, if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's first official joint interview post-proposal is anything to go by.
Speaking to the BBC's Mishal Husain on the occasion of their engagement, the pair discussed everything from how they were set up on a 'blind date' to their future charity work to the Corgi's reaction to Meghan (spoiler alert: they took to her immediately). First, though, came the proposal story.
It happened a few weeks ago, earlier this month, here at our cottage. A standard typical night for us […] trying to roast a chicken,' Harry explained.
'It was just an amazing surprise, just so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee,' added Meghan.
When asked by Husein whether her answer was an 'immediate yes,' Meghan revealed: 'As a matter of fact, I could barely let [Harry] finish proposing. I was like, “Can I say yes now?”'
'It was a really nice moment, just the two of us and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well,' Harry said.
The couple, who met just over 18 months ago, revealed they enjoyed five or six months of dating away from the public eye, a period of time which allowed the pair to get to know each other without any pressure or constraints. They were introduced 'by a mutual friend' - though just who that friend was remains a secret. 'It was definitely a set up,' Meghan laughed when asked about their first meeting, which proved so successful that her and Harry set a second date for the following day.
'The only thing I had asked [the mutual friend] was "Was he nice?" because if he wasn’t kind it didn’t seem that it would make sense,' Meghan said. On meeting the actress, meanwhile, Harry's immediate thought was: 'I’m going to have to really up my game, make sure I have good chat.' He needn't have worried: the pair immediately bonded over 'the different things we wanted to do in the world and how passionate we are about seeing change.'
Contrary to previous reports, Harry had in fact never heard of Meghan before the blind date: 'I’d never even heard about her until this friend said "Meghan Markle." I’d never watched Suits, I’d never seen Meghan before,' he said.
Here's everything else we learned from the interview...
Yes, Meghan has met the Queen
A couple of times, in fact. Meghan said she felt honoured 'to be able to meet her through [Harry's] lens not just through honour and respect as the monarch [...] but the love he feels for his grandmother,' before describing the Queen as 'an incredible woman.'
Plus, the corgis love her
'I've spent the last 33 years being barked at - this one walks in, absolutely nothing,' Harry joked of his fiancée's immediate affinity with his grandmother's favourite dogs.
The story behind the ring is heart-warming and heart-breaking in equal measure
'The ring is - is obviously yellow gold because that's what - her favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the - the little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewellery collection to make sure that she's with us on this - on this crazy journey together,' Harry said.
Meghan and Diana would've been 'thick as thieves'
'They’d be thick as thieves without question,' Harry answered when asked what his mother would've thought of Meghan. 'I think she’d be over the moon jumping up and down: so excited for me but also best friends with Meghan. It’s days like today that I really miss having her around. But with the ring and with everything else that's going on, I'm sure she is.' I'm not crying, you're crying.
Stay in is the new going out (for Meghan and Harry at least)
'We had to reverse the whole process. Rather than going out for dinner and being seen in public [...] It’s provided different opportunities and made us a hell of a lot closer in a short period of time,' Harry said of their courtship.
