It’s Prince George’s seventh birthday and, as per tradition, his parents have released some charming new pictures of the future king. Released on Tuesday evening, and published on the Kensington Royal Instagram account, they show George looking adorable as usual in a camouflage print T-shirt and, in the second picture, a khaki polo shirt that cost only £7.99 at Mango. The images were taken earlier this month by The Duchess of Cambridge, who is a keen photographer and has taken several of the official portraits of her three children, George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. They follow last year’s joyous ones, which celebrated George’s sixth birthday with portraits of the prince smiling as he played in the grass wearing an England football shirt.
It is yet to be seen how the family will mark the occasion – a large birthday party is unlikely given current circumstances - but there are sure to be presents and a cake. Kate is known to enjoy baking, and has previously revealed that Louis, her youngest, is ‘obsessed’ with former Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry.
We also know that George will expect a gift from Julia Samuel, one of his beloved godmothers. She has previously revealed that she likes to get her godson a present that challenges Prince William.
‘I do to George what [Diana] did to us, which is give impossible toys that are really noisy and take a lot of making’, she told Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast. ‘William then has to spend days putting together. And then put all the machinery together, and it makes awful tooting noises and lights flashing and all of that.’
Devious. We love it.
George’s birthday will not be acknowledged with the traditional ringing of the bells at Westminster Abbey. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the protocol has been suspended until August, when Princess Anne - born August 15th - will be celebrated with a few peals. This means that Meghan, George's aunty, will not be toasted either when she turns 39 on August 4th. Both Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis missed out too, though – their birthdays were in May and April – so at least the three siblings are in the same boat.
The family are currently based at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, their second home near Sandringham. They are likely to return to Kensington Palace soon, in line with George and Charlotte’s return to school in September. If his parents choose to follow the royal trend, then George may be heading to boarding school when he turns eight, but this is, sources say, still under discussion.
Happy Birthday George! To celebrate, take a look back at the other birthday portraits released over the years.
