A new book entitled ‘Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life’, has revealed previously undocumented details on the controversial love affair between the royal and his mistress Camilla Parker-Bowles.
According to People, the book reveals how Prince Charles ‘wept’ the night before his 1981 wedding to Princess Diana, as the royal felt torn between his feelings for former girlfriend Camilla and his new partner Diana.
Prince Charles first met Camilla back in 1971, which marked the beginning of their widely-reported love affair. The couple dated for two years before eventually splitting when Charles was stationed overseas with the Royal Navy in 1973.
The royal was just 24 at the time and reportedly felt too young to settle down with Camilla, who eventually married former partner Andrew Parker-Bowles later that year.
Yet Prince Charles and Camilla couldn't keep away from each other, eventually embarking on a love affair.
By 1980, Charles had begun dating Princess Diana and the pressure for him to marry soon mounted. When news broke that the pair had spent two nights together (which Diana denied), Prince Philip reportedly sent his son a strongly worded letter warning that Charles’ reputation would be under threat if he didn’t propose.
In the book, Bedell Smith says the letter was more a statement that ‘Charles should either propose to her or release her’. The royal eventually chose to propose to Diana in February 1981 despite the fact he ‘wasn’t in love’.
Charles and Diana went on to have two children, William and Harry. Their relationship eventually broke down in August 1996 however, just one year before Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car crash in Paris.
Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles wed on 9 April, 2005.
