April 29 2011. The date that gave Pippa Middleton (and her posterior) global acclaim. As bridesmaid at sister Kate Middleton’s wedding to Prince William, Pippa undoubtedly rose to sartorial fame, all thanks to that one dress.
The second Middleton hasn't been out the spotlight since, and thanks to her recent engagement to partner James Mathews the media attention has very much been on kate's younger sister.
To celebrate her wedding, we've taken a rounded up everything you need to know about the businesswoman turned author turned Royal.
Where was Pippa born?
Pippa was born on 6 September 1983 to Carole and Michael Middleton in Reading. She is the second of three children with siblings Catherine and James Middleton.
What was Pippa’s first job?
Following Pippa’s graduation from the University Of Edinburgh with a degree in English Literature, Pippa worked in PR for a luxury goods company. Pippa soon took interest in her parent’s company, Party Pieces, and ventured into the world of party planning. The family business was founded up by her mother Carole in 1987, selling gift bags, decorations and balloons.
Pippa soon went on to focus her attention on the family business as she edited the website whilst working with professional party planning company Table Talk. Following her foray in to party planning, Pippa went on to release a book entitled, Celebrate, in 2012.
Pippa also helped out with Kate’s nuptials, and it was actually her idea to serve bacon butties from food trucks and to dish up ice cream in the palace. She even went as far as to request disco balls for the reception. Quite the Royal party indeed.
Pippa’s love of sport
It’s no wonder Pippa and fiancé James are the perfect match, they both love sport. Not to mention their competitiveness. Pippa admitted in her debut book Celebrate, that her competitive streak began at school when playing conkers. She recalled, 'The trick was to paint clear nail varnish on the conkers to make them very tough and less likely to break'.
Growing up, Pippa continued to thrive within sport and gained a scholarship to Malborough College, (where she reportedly had a crush on the hockey teacher).
Ever since, Pippa has continued to challenge herself within the field and regularly participates in sporting events. With a 54 mile London to Brighton cycle under her belt, the 90km Vasaloppet cross-country ski and Race Across America, Pippa is continuously striving to beat previous records.
Fiancé James shares her love of sport and he had completed the 156 mile Marathon des Sables in 2008 before the pair met. In 2015, the pair participated in a 47-mile swim-run in Sweden, raising money for the Michael Matthews Foundation.
Who is James Mathews?
It was recently announced that Pippa Middleton is to follow in her sister’s footsteps down the aisle following a proposal from boyfriend James Matthews. Pippa is set to become Lady Glen Affric once he inherits the title as Laird of Glen Affric from his father David.
James is the co-founder of the Eden Rock Capital Management Group (an investment advisory firm to us). And it seems he already has something in common with Prince William and Prince Harry after he too studied at Eton college. Though James decided not to go to university and instead trained as a trader at Spear Leeds & Kellogg.
James is set to marry into the Royal family (as if meeting your boyfriend's parents isn't enough). But he is no stranger to the limelight. Brother Spencer Mathews has been making headlines ever since he first appeared on cult reality show Made In Chelsea. We wonder if the Queen is a fan of the series...
Pippa and Prince Harry
Pippa and Prince Harry have often been rumoured to be dating (well, we’ve often hoped they would get together) but unfortunately they have only ever been friends.
Though the pair have been close ever since Prince William married into the Middleton family. Let's not forget, Harry even has a nickname for Pippa. One word - Commando. Take it as you will.
Pippa’s royal asset
Pippa undoubtedly gained sartorial status on April 29, 2011 as her role as maid of honour to sister Kate Middleton’s wedding to Prince William, rendered international attention. Dressed in Alexander McQueen, all eyes were on Pippa which led to a surprising increase in the request for bottom lifts according to The Telegraph.
She reportedly told The Today’s Show Matt Lauer in 2014 that the attention was ‘completely unexpected’ as ‘The plan was not really for it to be a significant dress. Really just to sort of blend in with the train.’
She continued: ‘(I’m) glad it fitted. In retrospect, it fitted a little too well. As I have found out, recognition has its upside, its downside and - you may say - its backside.’ It seems she has quite the sense of humour too.
What will Pippa wear to her wedding?
Our bets are in. Following the mass media attention surrounding her role as bridesmaid for sister Kate’s wedding, we’ve been speculating as to what Pippa will wear to her own nuptials. As Kate donned a lace Alexander McQueen dress, we doubt Pippa will follow suit.
And remember, Pippa once recalled a childhood moment when speaking to Vanity Fair, on how she told her parents she would wear ‘tennis whites - shorts with no pleats or frills’ to her wedding. Will she sport thew athleisure trend perhaps?
Pippa VS Kate in the sartorial stakes
Kate Middleton is famous for her inimitable style (though it is one we so desperately aim to replicate) with her and son George's outfits selling out, well, instantantly. And those royally unattainable locks? Don't even get us started.
But ever since 2011, Pippa has made a name for herself in the fashion sphere, with brands desperately seeking to dress her. It is after all her style that often distracts us from he tennis come Wimbledon. But which sister obtains the greatest sense of style?
To help make up your mind, take a look back at Pippa's most iconic sartorial moments in the gallery below:
A huge tennis fan since childhood, Pippa has been a regular face at Wimbledon for years. This summer, Pippa donned a geometric mini dress by Tabitha Webb to the tennis tournament.
